2024 Brings New Energy to UUSA

05 January 2024

UUSA recently completed the installation of a state-of-the-art solar array in a leading-edge move toward sustainability.

Featured at the front and center of our site, the solar array can supply 1% of the energy used by our facility. That’s enough to power the entire Security Building.

This initiative symbolizes our commitment to clean energy and sets a precedent for responsible practices in the nuclear industry. The solar array will reduce our carbon footprint and foster a more environmentally conscious approach to power generation. It also takes us one step further in our global organization’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2040.

The array has been powered on and tested but will become fully operational after an inter connection agreement is reached with our energy provider, Xcel Energy.

Roger Curiel, Net Zero Project Manager, stated, “This is a great first step toward meeting our scope 2 target for net zero initiatives.”

The completion of the project marks a key milestone for Strategic Projects established as part of our site’s Excellence Plan. Our Site Management Team would like to thank everyone who contributed to the project’s success.

To date, UUSA has committed to supporting Urenco’s global net zero initiatives through the solar array, purchase of electric vehicles, and further working with Xcel Energy to ensure we are utilizing carbon-free sources.
